Throughout eight glorious years, and even his two month re-visit in 2012, Thierry Henry has contributed nothing but class to Arsenal Football Club. Countless Thierry Henry quotes have surfaced, each one telling a unique story about Thierry’s outlook on life, his confidence as a Footballer, and indeed, his deep-rooted love for Arsenal.

So, we’ve collected ten of the most interesting & relevant Thierry Henry quotes from the striker’s masterful career. The selected quotes include reflections upon his approach to adapting to new cultures, his emotional statue unveiling, and even winning the league at White Hart Lane.

1. I Don’t Calculate - I Act.

Uncalculated acts by Thierry Henry is nothing new to Arsenal fans. From bizarre penalties to creative finishes, there was never a boring moment. But this quote seems to imply that Thierry’s creativity was never just bound to his Football. The training ground, changing room, and undoubtedly, his personal life, will have witnessed the passion he speaks of here.

“I know at times I’m a pain in the neck, The Boss [Arsene Wenger] knows that for a fact! But that’s me, I’m 100%. Whatever I do, I do it with my heart. I don’t calculate - I act.”

2. I Always Think About What I Missed

It may be a slightly cliché expression, but I don’t doubt for a moment that Thierry was always lamenting his failures in order to further improve his game. At one stage in his Arsenal career, he was the best player in the world. Such a feat cannot be achieved without the attitude Thierry speaks of here.

“When I go home, sometimes, even when I had an amazing game, I always think about what I missed.”

3. A Gunner For Life

During his farewell speech to Arsenal fans, just before he departed to Barcelona, Thierry poured his heart out. This quote epitomises everything we love about Thierry. There have been many great players in the history of Football, and indeed in the history of Arsenal - who were loved. But none loved us back like Thierry Henry.

“Arsenal is in my blood as well as my heart. I will always, always, always remember you guys. I said I was going to be a Gooner for life and I did not lie because when you are a Gooner, you will always be a Gooner. This club is in my heart and will remain in my heart forever.”

4. Only Sometimes…

This may seem like a very simple, almost comedic quote, but I actually think it’s quite profound. Either that, or Thierry was just having one of his ‘I don’t calculate’ moments. If you ask me, our current Arsenal side need to read, and comprehend this very straight-forward piece of footballing advice from Thierry Henry’s master-class.

“Sometimes in football, you have to score goals.”

5. It’s Just A Feeling

Anybody who watched Thierry Henry play on a regular basis, will be nodding their heads as they read this next quote. Whenever Thierry was in possession of the ball, the team, the fans and even the managerial staff, took a moment out to relax and enjoy. He oozes confidence when on the ball, and this ‘feeling’ which he encounters is definitely felt by those watching him too.

“When I step on the pitch, when I have the ball I know it’s mine. It’s just a feeling.”

6. Always A Gooner

At the unveiling of his statue outside the Emirates Stadium, Thierry summed up his entire Arsenal career in one beautiful quote. His love for Arsenal, his self-proclaimed ‘fan’ status, and his disposition towards Tottenham. A real Gooner.

“Everybody knows how much I love Arsenal - I became a fan. And to be out here [in front of the Emirates as a statue] celebrating a goal against Tottenham, there’s not much else to say after that…Like I’ve said before, Once a Gooner, always a Gooner.”

7. Knowing The Club, Country & Culture

In today’s footballing world, footballers walk in and out of new clubs, and new countries, without even pausing to take in the scenery. Thierry Henry on the other hand, is a true professional. He explains here how he takes the time to understand the club, and the culture surrounding it, in order to become the best. He certainly did all of that and more in his time at Arsenal.

“That is something that I always want to do when I arrive somewhere, is to know about the culture, the country and about the club, to make sure I know what it takes to wear the jersey.”

8. I Don’t Regret Leaving Arsenal

A quote that, at the time, was probably taken out of context by one reporter or another. Thierry Henry doesn’t regret leaving Arsenal for Barcelona. Not because he doesn’t love Arsenal, but because he simply doesn’t regret.

“I don’t regret leaving [Arsenal]. I don’t regret stuff in my life, it happens for a reason, whatever reason, in my personal life also, I don’t regret stuff.”

9. I Actually Became A Fan

An interesting quote shedding some light on some of Thierry’s more criticized moments on the pitch. He explains here that the reason for his famously ‘moody’ or ‘angry’ expressions on the field of play were simply out of love for Arsenal, just like a fan.

“It took me a while to understand what that club [Arsenal] meant. That why sometimes I got so mad, because I was so in to it. I became a fan. I actually became a fan.”

10. Celebrating On Your Pitch

This final quote is perhaps my favourite. During an interview with TIME magazine, Thierry reveals how he taunted the Tottenham players just seconds before winning the Premier League, and celebrating on their rancid pitch. Spoken like a true Arsenal fan, and a true Arsenal legend.

“When we won the league at Tottenham, they came back 2-2 in the last-minute of the game, and they’re celebrating - because they’re happy to draw against us, obviously. And I remember saying to Mauricio Tarricco, do you realise we only need a point to be Champions? And they all [were really shocked]. So I said ‘Yes. Now we’re going to celebrate on your pitch. Bye bye!'”

That should do it. Ten of the very best Thierry Henry quotes, exemplifying his love for Arsenal, his confident attitude in the face of uncertainty, and even a beautifully crafted dig at Tottenham. Definitely sounds like Thierry to me.

Leaving aside the fact that he is our all time top goal scorer, it’s difficult to see how any player will every eclipse Thierry Henry’s status at Arsenal. The quotes above reflect his very real passion on the pitch for Arsenal, paired perfectly with deep sincerity off it. It’s precisely that attitude that will cement him in the hearts of Arsenal fans forever.
