Despite bringing in five new players this summer, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has advised Unai Emery to sign Marco Veratti from his former club Paris Saint Germain, according to Goal.
Arsenal legend, Keown, believes that the Gunners’ squad would need more steel and has told the new manager to bring in the tough-tackling Italian to the Emirates Stadium this summer in order to be a contender for the major titles going into this new season.
One of the major priorities of Unai Emery includes getting the Gunners back into the Champions League for the 2019/2020 season. Obviously, this may prove to be a challenge considering there are quite a few top clubs in the Premier League that will be fighting for a place. However, plenty of the best footballing pundits are backing Arsenal’s chances of bagging a place. Needless to say, if you were betting on it, there would be plenty of research that needs to be done. Arsenal isn’t the only team making decent signings, so make sure that if you do want to put money on the Gunners making the top four, don’t just use your footballing betting strategies, but do lots of research too. This is where you could be smart and try to outsmart the bookies for a value bet.
Keown insists that one of the ways Emery might achieve success is if he brings in Veratti to shore-up his midfield, as he knows all too well the powerful midfielder’s capabilities after managing him during his two years at PSG.
The 26-year-old Italian box-to-box star is considered as one of Europe’s best midfielders and could be lured away from PSG with the right offer, and Keown now believes the Gunners should be looking at his direction for solidity.
“To expect that Emery will transform this team into champions overnight is unrealistic” he said via Mirror.
“Arsenal has been run Arsene Wenger’s way for 22 years and, given the sheer spending power of the Manchester clubs, the competition is fierce.
“Emery inherits a side that can do damage in the final third but lacks a steeliness and a nastiness, particularly away from home. If he can restore these ingredients, then Arsenal can at least challenge in the Premier League.
“The fans want to see a team that can dig in, battle and scrap.
“Emery needs to bring in a player like Marco Verratti, who he managed at Paris Saint-Germain, to instill those qualities in midfield.”
“[Ivan] Gazidis was also impressed by Emery’s analysis of every player and I am intrigued to see how he tries to cure Arsenal’s defensive ills.”
