Arsene Wenger has revealed he had fears about how his team would cope against West Brom after back to back defeats against Everton and Manchester City.
Arsenal defeated West Brom 1-0 on Monday, courtesy an Olivier Giroud late goal. Prior to the game against the Baggies, Arsenal had lost two consecutive games and Wenger knew we needed all three points in order to keep up in the title race. And Wenger says the win was vital to prevent the team’s mentality from collapsing.
“It could have been a 0-0 and sometimes you have to accept that,” he told Arsenal Player.
“But I believe we were relentless, we were composed, we didn’t rush our game, we didn’t panic and we didn’t make a mistake at the back.
“For us it was mentally vital to win the game and that’s why I believe it was a big relief. Because you could see that mentally we are not used to losing games. It could have become a block a little bit, so it was good to get that out of the way.”
Indeed, the win was a big relief, considering league leaders Chelsea were already wining against Bournemouth 2-0 when Giroud broke the deadlock. Failure for us to secure maximum points would have increased the distance between Arsenal and top spot, in turn ruling us out of the title race.
Hopefully, we can build up on this win and put up a good run of results and hope our rivals slip up as we try to end our twelve year wait for a league title.
