Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Hector Bellerin is close to signing a new contract at Arsenal.
The 21 year old was the subject of interest from Barcelona and Manchester City in the summer transfer window, following his superb form last season.
Despite having three years left in his current contract, Arsenal have moved to tie the defender down to a long term contract to end the hopes of other clubs signing him and Wenger has confirmed we are close to agreeing fresh terms with the player.
Reports first emerged a few weeks ago from Spanish Publication Sport that Barcelona had cooled their interest in the defender after they were informed that Bellerin will sign a new deal at the Emirates. Since then the defender has been in talks with Arsenal and Wenger’s comment shows that an announcement is no longer far away.
“We are working on Bellerin’s contract extension and an agreement seems to be close. We’ll reveal the details at the end of negotiations,” Wenger told reporters.
“And we are not far. It will be great. Let’s say ‘it is great’ when it is done.”
Bellerin’s importance to our squad in recent seasons cannot be overemphasized and it’s good news that he has decided to commit his future to us. The new deal is expected to double his current £50,000 a week salary to about a £100,000 weekly.
I never had any doubt about the player’s commitment to us when he was being linked with a return to the Camp Nou and his decision not to follow the path of Cesc Fabregas will further endear him to the heart of Arsenal supporters, including myself.
