Arsenal defender Nacho Monreal has revealed how Santi Cazorla convinced him to sign for Arsenal.
The left back completed a deadline day move in the January 2013 transfer window to Arsenal and he admits everything happened so fast, thanks to Santi Cazorla.
‘I remember on January 31, I woke up, looked at my phone and has two [missed] calls from Santi. And I thought it was really strange, Santi calling me in the morning,’ said Monreal.
‘So I called him: “Santi, how are you? What’s happened? [he replied] “Nacho, do you want to come to Arsenal?” [I replied]
“What, pardon me? Yes, of course”‘
‘So the transfer was really quick. On one day I was training in the morning with Malaga and I didn’t know anything, and then 10 hours later I was signing my contract with Arsenal. It was a really, really strange day for me, really happy of course, a good day for me.
The defender was actually brought in to provide cover and competition for Gibbs, the Spaniard initially struggled when he joined Arsenal but his 2014/2015 form saw him become the club’s first choice left back and with his contract set to expire in the summer, Wenger will be keen on securing the defender on a new deal.
The 29 year old has played 15 times for the Gunners this term and has been an important part of the team’s backline that is second best in the country with only Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United having a better defensive record.
