Arsenal’s hope of landing Real Madrid midfielder Asier Illarramendi has been squashed after news that the player has agreed and completed a medical with Real Sociedad.
Illarramendi, who has been on the fringes at Madrid, has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer, with Arsenal and Liverpool leading the chase for his signature.
But Illarra’s home town club Sociedad, has won the race for his signature, with Mundo Deportivo confirming that the Spaniard is on the verge of completing a move back to the Anoeta Stadium after successfully passing his medical.
The 25-year old defensive midfield star was signed by Real for a fee believed to be in the region of £23.5million in the summer of 2013 as a potential replacement for Xabi Alonso.
However, the Spaniard failed to shine at the Spanish capital despite making 90 appearances for the Los Blancos and has opted for a move back to his former club.
A tweet confirming his successful medical read “Illarramendi passes the medical examination”
