Arsenal 4 – 1 Liverpool
With second spot in sight, Arsenal needed to secure all three points at home to Liverpool. But it wasn’t going to be easy, with the northerners also chasing Champions League qualification.
Arsenal started the game brilliantly. Ozil, Giroud, Alexis, Cazorla and Ramsey were all running rings around the Liverpool defence.
The chances came and went though, with Ramsey not scoring a very big chance quite early on. By the thirtieth minute, Liverpool were back in the game, looking dangerous through Sterling and Markovic. But it didn’t last long for them.
In the thirty-seventh minute, Bellerin shimmied in the box, and curled a beautiful shot into the far bottom corner. It was a sweet, sweet finish.
“Mesut Ozil converted a free kick brilliantly by lashing it into the top corner. Arsenal were cruising now.”
Three minutes later, Mesut Ozil converted a free kick brilliantly by lashing it into the top corner. Arsenal were cruising now.
Yet just before half time, Alexis Sanchez cut inside and smashed the ball into the net from outside the box. Mignolet couldn’t react fast enough.
The second half started well for Arsenal again, but Liverpool eventually gained control.
Wenger took off Ramsey for Flamini and Ozil for Welbeck, setting out his team to sit back and defend for half an hour. Not a good move.
“Sanchez played a good ball into Giroud, who curled his shot past Mignolet to make it four. Another delicious finish.”
Liverpool pulled on back in the seventy-sixth minute when Bellerin fouled Sterling in the box. Henderson converted the penalty.
The remaining few minutes were edgy, but things cooled when Emre Can was sent off for picking up a second yellow card.
Just before the final whistle, Sanchez played a good ball into Giroud, who curled his shot past Mignolet to make it four. Another delicious finish.
In the end, Arsenal found the game easy, and the table was looking healthier than ever.
Arsenal Player Ratings
Made some good saves, maybe should have stopped the penalty.
Not his best performance, but he did well.
Made some important tackles in the fist half. Went off injured early second half.
Could have been exposed by Sterling today, but he wasn’t. Played very well actually.
His goal was absolutely superb, but his performance was marred by a yellow card and a penalty. Could have been sent off. Overall performance was good though.
Tackle, tackle, tackle. The man wins the ball back for fun sometimes. Also made some good passes.
Picked up two assists, but should have done more. Missed a good chance in the first half, and looked absolutely knackered in the second before coming off.
Not a great performance. Poor passing and not always in the game.
Alexis: [8.5/10] – MOTM
Tricks, work rate, an assist and a stunning goal. An Alexis Sanchez performance.
Looked great on the ball, showed skill, great passing and put away an excellent free kick.
Took both of his chances very well, and worked hard all game.
What a performance.
Sanchez and Ozil ran the game at times, while Giroud and Ramsey did well to contribute. Liverpool simply couldn’t handle the quality on show.
A clean sheet would have been ideal, but in hindsight Liverpool were always going to score. Arsenal were classy today, and fully deserved the three points as well as the four goals.
The table is looking juicy. A run of wins between now and the end of the season could product some interesting results.
