Half way through the 2013 campaign, Arsenal sit in sixth place in the Premier League, having been knocked out of the easiest of all four competitions, the Capital One Cup. Lacklustre performances & poor team morale has plagued Arsenal’s season, and Arsene Wenger has yet again been the subject of scrutiny from fans & media alike.
It is no wonder then, that Arsenal are under heavy pressure to deliver some good news before the end of this 2013 winter transfer window. It’s time for Arsene Wenger to really ponder about his ailing Arsenal squad, and how to fortify it.
In this transfer window preview, I’d like to look at players potential leaving Arsenal, as well as players potentially signing on the dotted line. Rumours & heresy will be rife within coming weeks, so I’m going to avoid mentioning players who haven’t already been heavily linked with Arsenal.
Players Going Out
Theo Walcott has been at the centre of a contract storm for over six months now. Yet another example of Arsene Wenger’s contract procrastination. Currently, Theo is legally allowed to consider contract offers from any club. Arsenal are hopeful of signing the Englishman, but realistically, movement will need to be made soon, or we’ll risk losing yet another star player.
Sebastien Squillaci can now see the light at the end of his Arsenal tunnel. The French defender never established himself for the Gunners, and he’ll be desperate to find a new club. If anybody will take him that is. Big Seb even managed to make our Sling Your Hook list last Summer.
Johan Djourou has been hot & cold for years now. He has put in some stellar performances for the club, mixed in amongst some terrible errors through lack of concentration. Hoffenheim have shown interest, and I’m sure he’ll find a new club comfortably enough. Well, I hope. [Update: Johan has joined Hannover 96 for a six month loan]
Marouane Chamakh had six successful months at Arsenal after he first arrived, followed by years of abject failure. The Moroccan has been out of favour for a while, and it’s time he moved on. A loan deal with West Ham seems to be on the cards. It’s not ideal, but it’s better than nothing. [Update: West Ham have signed Chamakh on a six month loan deal].
Players Coming In
Andrian Lopez has been heavily linked with us over the last week and a half, and some news outlets seem to think the story has legs. Lopez is a Spanish international and currently plies his trade as a striker for Athletico Madrid.
Yann M’Vila is an old name for Arsenal fans. He was strongly rumoured to be joining the Gunners last Summer, but the deal just never materialised. Now that the transfer window has re-opened, the French defensive midfielder has been linked yet again. It’s an interesting one to say the least.
Thierry Henry is a somewhat familiar face around the Arsenal camp. The living legend might just be returning to the club for his second loan spell in two years. Some fans have bemoaned the rumour, but what Gunner wouldn’t want Thierry back?
Wilfried Zaha has made some headlines over recent months, as he continues to impress for Crystal Palace. Manchester United & Chelsea have both shown interest in the young Englishman, but the Winger has expressed his love for Arsenal via Twitter or more than one occasion.
David Villa has just today been linked with Arsenal from various sources, but none of which seem very reliable. Probably not a lot in this one, which is unfortunate, because it would be a mouth-watering purchase.
Players being lightly linked with a move to the Gunners are striker Eduardo Vargas & midfielder Lucas Biglia. Although, I wouldn’t read too much into the Biglia story, as he has been linked with Arsenal for over two years.
At the time of writing, those are the biggest names making the biggest news stories. No doubt, this time next week many new names will be mentioned and heavily linked, but we all know that it’s an Arsenal policy to keep it under wraps until it’s officially announced on their website.
This is certainly a big transfer window for Arsenal, and for once there are players available & linked who could bring in some real quality. Let’s hope Arsenal act swiftly, or act at all.
With our squad looking light in some areas, who would you like Arsene to sign this month?
