Arsenal legend Martin Keown believes Unai Emery should look at signing Marco Veratti from Paris Saint Germain, according to Goal.
The former Arsenal defender believes that the Gunners lack steel and would need the new manager to bring in nastiness to the side during the summer transfer window in other to fight for major titles going into the new season.
Top on Unai Emery’s priority list include getting Arsenal back into the Champions League for the 2019/2020 season. Surely, it won’t be an easy job to pull off considering the number of top clubs in England currently fighting for a place in the top four. However, top football pundits, and sports betting sites such as voetbalgokken.nl are backing Arsenal under new coach Unai Emery to deliver the goods this new season.
And he has been recommended Marco Veratti for such job, as Emery knows exactly his capacity after managing him during his two years at PSG.
The 25-year-old Italian international is considered as one of Europe’s best midfielders and could be lured away from PSG with the right offer, and Keown now believes Arsenal should move for him.
“To expect that Emery will transform this team into champions overnight is unrealistic” he said via Mirror.
“Arsenal has been run Arsene Wenger’s way for 22 years and, given the sheer spending power of the Manchester clubs, the competition is fierce.
“Emery inherits a side that can do damage in the final third but lacks a steeliness and a nastiness, particularly away from home. If he can restore these ingredients, then Arsenal can at least challenge in the Premier League.
“The fans want to see a team that can dig in, battle and scrap.
“Emery needs to bring in a player like Marco Verratti, who he managed at Paris Saint-Germain, to instil those qualities in midfield.”
“[Ivan] Gazidis was also impressed by Emery’s analysis of every player and I am intrigued to see how he tries to cure Arsenal’s defensive ills.”
