Arsenal are set to lose another transfer target after it was confirmed that Liverpool are on the verge of signing Asier Illarramendi from Real Madrid, according to Metro.
The central midfielder joined Madrid two seasons ago from Real Sociedad, but has not been able to hold down a first team shirt at the Bernabeu.
Real Madrid are believed to be willing to let the 25-year-old leave this summer, attracting the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool.
Liverpool see Illarramendi as a replacement for Lucas Leiva, and with the Spaniard valued at only £16million, his transfer is imminent.
The midfielder has made 59 appearances already for Madrid, and would bring with him a wealth of experience from playing in a top team.
Arsenal have been tracking Illara all summer to fill in for their defensive midfielder need.
But with Francis Coquelin proving to be a worthy first team option, and the return of captain Mikel Arteta as a back-up to the Frenchman, Liverpool have been left in pole position to add the midfielder to their squad.
