Newcastle 1 – 2 Arsenal
After exiting the Champions League on away goals, Arsenal travelled north to face a relatively poor Newcastle side. Three points were needed in order to keep the chase up for second spot.
The Gunners started brilliantly.
Alexis, Cazorla and Ramsey were all enjoying time on the ball, with Giroud linking up nicely with the players around him.
The deadlock was broken by the man in form, Olivier Giroud. In the twenty-fourth minute, Welbeck headed on a Cazorla free kick, which the Frenchman was able to knee into the net.
“Unfortunately though, Newcastle came out hungrier in the second half.”
Four minutes later, Giroud doubled the lead by heading a Cazorla corner into the goal’s bottom corner. Lots of corners were involved.
Unfortunately though, Newcastle came out hungrier in the second half.
The Magpies were piling on the pressure, culminating in a Sissoko goal in the forty-ninth minute. It was poor defending from Arsenal, allowing a cross to come to the Frenchman unmarked on the edge of the box, where he slotted the ball past Ospina.
“It wasn’t pretty, but in the end, all three points were held on to.”
The rest of the second half was nervy.
Wenger threw on Rosicky and Flamini for Alexis and Cazorla, which was bizarre. Welbeck remained, despite offering very little.
This only helped Newcastle to settle. They were creating the chances, and were looking far more dangerous.
Yet Arsenal managed to hold on. It wasn’t pretty, but in the end, all three points were held on to.
Arsenal Player Ratings
Made some good saves, couldnt see Sissoko for his goal.
Decent defensively, didn’t get forward much.
Equally comfortable. Looking like an able replacement for Mertesacker.
Far too easy to beat, and didn’t do too great going forward either.
Did his thing as usual. Great tackling, good positioning.
Not effective at either end of the pitch, missed a good chance in the first half.
Did well in the first half, provided the free kick in the build up to Giroud’s first, then the corner for his second.
Worked hard in the first half and looked good, faded in the second.
Technically got the assist for Giroud’s first, but he had another poor, lazy and ineffective game. Unreal that he starts ahead of Walcott.
Giroud: [8/10] – MOTM
Took both of his chances very well, and worked hard all game.
Nervy at Newcastle
The first half was great, but the second half was horrible.
Newcastle dominated the second period, and Arsenal did well to told on, really.
Giroud’s first half performance kept the three points in our grasp, and they’ll no doubt prove vital as we move into the final stretch.
Nothing wrong with grinding out a win away from home.
